The mosque was raided so as to prevent Palestinians from resisting Israelis wishing to lay the "foundation stone" for the "Third Temple" and claim sovereignty over the ground beneath Al-Aqsa Mosque. While spraying the crowded area with machine-gun fire from all directions, 23 Palestinians were killed and 850 others were wounded. Palestinians recognize the attack as the Al-Aqsa Mosque Massacre.
